Ballia’s Bhrigu Ashram to Get ₹8.74-Crore Makeover on Lines of Kashi Vishwanath Corridor

Lucknow/Ballia: The Uttar Pradesh government plans to redevelop Maharshi Bhrigu Ashram in Ballia at an estimated cost of ₹8.74 crore, with a focus on improving visitor facilities and showcasing the region’s religious and mythological heritage.

The project, being undertaken under the Chief Minister’s Tourism Sites Development Scheme, envisages a grand entrance gate, a two-storey multipurpose hall, shelters for pilgrims, wall art and murals, modern signage, and a light-and-sound show highlighting the legacy of Maharshi Bhrigu.

The proposed redevelopment is in line with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s vision of developing the ashram on the lines of the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor. According to local religious tradition, Maharshi Bhrigu, one of the revered ancient sages, performed penance at the site and composed the Bhrigu Samhita there.

The project aims to make the ashram more accessible and attractive to devotees and tourists while presenting its historical and cultural significance through modern tourism infrastructure.

Uttar Pradesh Tourism and Culture Minister Jaiveer Singh said the state government was working to strengthen religious and spiritual tourism under the chief minister’s guidance. He described the ashram as an important centre of the state’s ancient cultural and mythological heritage.

Amit Abhijat, Additional Chief Secretary of the Tourism, Culture and Religious Affairs Department, said the government was prioritising the development of religious, spiritual and mythologically significant destinations through various schemes. He added that integrating the ashram with the state’s 12 tourism circuits would help broaden its cultural reach and promote religious tourism in the region.

Ballia, located near the Bihar border and around 130 kilometres from Varanasi, has a rich historical and cultural legacy. The district is also associated with India’s freedom struggle. According to official figures cited in the project announcement, more than 10.31 lakh tourists visited Ballia in 2025.

The redevelopment is expected to strengthen the district’s tourism infrastructure and provide visitors with improved facilities to explore its religious traditions and heritage.
